Starting a label from a tram depot

Five years of Nachtfeld Tonträger: eleven records, a rented depot and a pressing plant that still answers the phone.

■ Entry

Written by Ida Nachtfeld in Leipzig. Photographs from the archive.

Why a label

Nobody else wanted to release a cassette of tram noise in 2020, so she did it herself. The label now has eleven records, all pressed at the same plant in the Czech Republic.

What it costs

The rent on the depot is less than a month of studio time in Berlin. The heating is worse. The records sound better.

From the entry

We rent the depot by the month. We have renewed it sixty times.
